If there’s one genre that truly demonstrates how special video games really are, it’s horror. Scary movies are great, but nothing compares to feeling like you’re actually trapped inside a zombie-infested mansion, haunted hospital, or other terrifying place.
For PlayStation 4 fans, there’s no shortage of excellent horror titles to check out. To help you decide which ones you should go through first, here’s our list of the top 10 best PS4 horror games to play right now.
Top 10 Best PS4 Horror Games Right Now
This underrated survival horror title marked the return of Shinji Mikami to the genre that made him famous. Mikami is known for directing some of the best games of all time, including the original Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4.
The Evil Within proves Mikami still has it in him by delivering a terrifying experience. You play as Sebastian Castellanos, a detective lost in a distorted world where horrifying creatures dwell. Despite having a few technical issues, The Evil Within was praised for its vivid horror elements and challenging gameplay.
For many, Among the Sleep will feel a bit familiar. This game puts you in the shoes of a toddler who just woke up in the middle of the night and desperately seeks to reach their parent’s bedroom. You’ll remember just how frightening these nights were as you explore a scary world from a child’s perspective.
Throughout Among the Sleep you’re being chased by two unstoppable monsters, a female-looking figure and a being that appears to wear a trench coat. Luckily, you have your sentient teddy bear to help you light the way. Among the Sleep was met with a positive reception for its haunting atmosphere, unique perspective, and psychology elements.
There are few places more frightening to be trapped in than an abandoned psychiatric hospital. In Outlast, you must explore the remote Mount Massive Asylum as a freelance investigative journalist. It’s not far inside before he discovers countless mutilated corpses left that way by deranged patients known as “variants.”
Outlast puts less emphasis on story and more on creating an atmosphere that’s creepy enough to have you playing with the lights on. Limited vision and plenty of jump scares waiting for you around every corner makes this the perfect horror game for any fan of the genre. Outlast was successful enough to spawn a sequel, which releases April 25, 2017.
Back in 1998 a little game called Resident Evil hit the video game market and served as the launching pad for one of the best franchises of all time. It is known for defining the survival horror genre at the advent of 3D gaming. But what’s more impressive about this iconic title is that it still holds up more than two decades later.
That’s why it has received a number of re-releases– this being the latest one. Resident Evil HD Remaster once again tells the story of Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, two members of an elite task force sent to investigate Raccoon City. Their mission becomes a nightmare as they become trapped in a mansion infested with not just zombies but other undead monsters as well.
5. Until Dawn
In Until Dawn you play as several teens who thought it would be a good idea to spend their weekend inside an old lodge. Of course, it was in this same lodge that two of their friends mysteriously disappeared a year prior. Before long, they’re being stalked by a psychopath that’s hell-bent on killing them all before sunrise.
What makes Until Dawn unique is that it’s more of an interactive drama than a typical video game. As you switch between the eight characters you’re forced to make choices that significantly alter the story’s ending. Until Dawn was praised upon release for its choice-driven narrative and frightening horror elements.
This excellent sci-fi survival horror game does away with generic jump scares and instead makes use of new ideas to keep you scared. Taking pages from the fantastic Bioshock and Dead Space games, Soma has you explore an underwater research facility. Things get creepy right away as the machinery in the remote facility begins taking on human-like characteristics.
Although there is some action, Soma instead keeps you tense and immersed through the use of puzzles and stealth. You’ll hold your breathe as you hide from scary creatures roaming the dark corridors. Soma has received positive reviews for its atmospheric setting and engaging, thought-provoking story.
Back in 1979, Ridley Scott scared audiences out of their seats with a unique and innovative movie you’ve probably heard of— Alien. The dangerous extraterrestrial became one of the most frightening creatures ever to appear on the big screen as it stalked and killed people with ease.
Since then, many have tried (and failed) to create a video game the appropriately matches the level of fear and anxiety provoked by the films. Alien: Isolation succeeds by delivering an experience that’s worthy of being on the list of best survival horror titles on PS4. This game earned several game of the year awards and was highly praised for its stealth gameplay and sound design.
The newest title on this list is also one of the best. After Resident Evil 6 left fans disappointed with where the franchise was going, Capcom decided to return to its roots and deliver a survival horror experience worthy of the Resident Evil name. Resident Evil 7 does just that and more by giving us an experience that’s both refreshing and reminiscent of the original Resident Evil games.
What sets Resident Evil 7 apart from the rest of the series is that it’s in first-person mode instead of the usual third-person. This choice allowed Capcom to create an even more immersive journey as you’re forced to explore a remote plantation owned by a deranged family and crawling with horrifying creatures. Resident Evil 7 was praised for its good gameplay, gorgeous visuals, and well-executed horror elements.
(With PlayStation VR, Resident Evil 7 becomes one of the most thrilling horror games you can play today.)
It just wouldn’t be a proper survival horror games list without one of the best titles to ever grace the industry. The Last of Us is known for many things, including its amazing story, great visuals, and addicting gameplay. But at the end of the day, it’s the survival horror elements that made this title so memorable.
The Last of Us Remastered drops you in a time when an outbreak of a mutant fungus has turned most of humanity into terrible, cannibalistic monsters. Players must wisely use what little weapons and ammo they can find to survive, which often involves sneaking past creatures who can tear you apart in seconds. The original The Last of Us earned countless awards and remains one Sony’s best-selling titles.
10. Amnesia: Collection
The Amnesia games have been sending chills down gamer’s spines since 2010 when the first title originally released. This great collection include Amnesia: The Dark Descent, an expansion called Justine, and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. While the sequels and expansion are great, it’s The Dark Descent that’s widely considered to be among the best PC horror titles.
In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, you must explore a dark castle while avoiding scary Lovecraftian monsters. The sequel, A Machine for Pigs, received less praise but still stands up as an excellent horror title. Both games are famous for providing one of the most ominous and atmospheric video game settings of all time. It can be purchased on the Playstation Store.
