The market for competitive shooter/MOBA titles has been competitive itself with so many titles fighting to be the most popular. One of them is Battleborn, an online hero FPS by Gearbox Software that may have had a different fate if it weren’t for the existence of Blizzard Entertainment’s own Overwatch. The drop in Battleborn players was so significant when Overwatch released that Gearbox was forced to make pricing changes that eventually led to a free-to-play model.
Unfortunately, it looks like Gearbox is giving up on Battleborn altogether after announcing that the upcoming Fall update will be its last. On the official Gearbox forums, creative director Randy Varnell discussed how the Battleborn team will step away from the game to focus on a different unannounced project.
The good news is that Battleborn servers will remain active for the foreseeable future, allowing those who do enjoy the game to keep playing. A free trial of Battleborn is available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
