Rumor has it, giant tech company Samsung decided Siri and Cortana had their times and went with its own humanity-wiping digital assistant, going by the non-suspecting gentlemanly name ‘Bixby’.
‘Bixby’ will (probably) debut along with Samsung’s new flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, and will sport features like voice recognition, commands and language cues to realize various tasks – like delete messages, forward calls and the usual.
Viv + SIRI = ?
Earlier this year, we saw how Samsung did a trademark check for computer software that eerily reminds of the next gen A.I. which will wipe out all of humanity in an instant. Also, given the tendency of Samsung phones to spontaneously combust, ‘Bixby’ may very well execute orders non-compliant with TSA standards after all.
Silly jokes aside, and we trace how Samsung acquired the team behind startup Viv – Dag Kittlaus, Chris Brigham, Adam Cheyer – along with the software of the same name.
Knowing the three previously worked on Siri, it’s expected ‘Bixby’ to take the best features of its previous “incarnations” and mold them into something extraordinary. Also, Viv supposedly had characteristics that enabled third-party devs to join the, well, party.
And how will ‘Bixby’ perform? Albeit information is scarce, possible parallels can be drawn to intelligent digital assistants within the hardware of the Echo speakers, MS’ Windows Phone and devices that utilize the full horsepower of Android and iOS.
To conclude, and we can safely assume that “Her” slowly turns into reality, but instead of Scarlett Johansson, we’ll end up stuck with the voice of none other than John Cleese as Bixby.
