The best multiplayer PS3 games you should be playing
It’s hard to sum each up with just a few paragraphs, so we’ve tried to mention only the best features. But these are games with multiplayer modes so expansive that you’ll definitely not want to miss out.
Of course you’ve probably heard of the more popular PS3 multiplayer games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. But one of the best multiplayer games on PS3 came as a surprise and has been a success ever since. We’re talking about Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn.
So please don’t think this list will just consist of shooters as FF14: ARR proved that MMORPGs could be done successfully on consoles. It’s never been a better time to be a multiplayer gamer. And the PlayStation 3 has some of the best games available. There’s just so many titles to choose from!
So let’s get started with our list of the more popular multiplayer PS3 games currently available.
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
Treyarch has added new features to the already addictive online gameplay, including new specializations, new maps and new gameplay features that give Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer a complete revamp.
With Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Treyarch has crafted a brand new momentum-based chained-movement system. This new system gives players the ability to fluidly move through the maps with a whole new sense of speed and purpose. And you can utilize the new movement system all while having absolute control over your new arsenal of weapons.
Some of the new movement system includes:
- User controlled thrust jumps
- Mantling abilities in a multitude of combinations
Another huge addition to Black Ops 3 are the Specialist Characters. You can expect Call of Duty’s multiplayer to forever be changed as they have now introduced the new Specialist characters. This is a new system that allows players a fun way to master each specific character’s capabilities and weapons all while ranking up in the game .
Of course no new Call of Duty game would be a true Call of Duty title without the fun and frantic Zombies mode. This time around, you can expect an actual full-game experience. This year’s CoD Zombie offering has its own unique storyline that makes Black Ops 3 Zombies the most exciting and fun Zombies mode ever. One of the great additions is that Treyarch has added a full XP-based progression system which will give CoD players a lot more re-playability and plenty of depth to the already engaging gameplay that Call of Duty Zombies has been known for.
CoD has always been up there with the best of multiplayer and these new additions have made it even better. Where gamers had become fed up with each title being similar to the last, Black Ops 3 represents a complete multiplayer overhaul that a lot of fans are currently enjoying.
2. GTA V Online
Grand Theft Auto V is arguably one of the best games ever produced and the multiplayer mode, GTA Online, is playing a massive part in its success.
GTA Online provides a totally different, but equally immersive experience to that of the game’s story mode. Players begin by creating a fully customizable character and are then placed into the sprawling city of Los Santos – where anything is possible.
Players can buy and modify cars, fly fighter jets, drive tanks, parachute from skyscrapers – to name just a handful of possibilities. And that’s just in the free mode, which is playable with up to 16 people.
Head to head modes include death matches, captures, and immersive races, all of which earn experience to level your character and unlock new weapons, vehicles and more. Custom maps and races can also be created and Rockstar releases regular free updates to make it even more expansive.
This game really is a step into the next generation of console multiplayer and has hundreds, if not thousands of hours of things to do. It’s a great PS3 multiplayer title and definitely not one to be missed.
3. Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn
Despite the huge popularity of PC MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games), consoles are still yet to fully adopt them. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn looks set to change that forever by being one of the most expansive MMOs to hit consoles.
Players begin by creating a character of a certain class, ranging from Gladiators and Marauders to Archers and Rogues – each offering unique combat and magic abilities. They are then launched into the game’s world and carry out quests both alone and with others. All while growing their character and unlocking a range of new equipment.
Being an MMO, gamers find themselves alongside thousands of other players at any one time, essentially becoming part of a huge, endless online world.
Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn is one of the best PS3 multiplayer games that has a lot to offer console gamers.
- Expansive story quests
- A large amount of fun Dungeons
- Primal fights
- PvP combat
- Treasure hunts
- Daily Quests
- Well thought out customization options
This title has given a new lease of life to the MMO genre within console gaming and is highly recommended for fans of the PC counterparts. If MMOs are something you’re yet to explore, this is the perfect game with which to start.
4. Battlefield 4
Recognized as long-time rival to the Call of Duty franchise, Battlefield games have been offering an alternative FPS experience for years – and Battlefield 4 is bigger and more explosive than any other installment.
It’s got the usual features of an online FPS; several adversarial game modes, customization options, etc., but is made unique by the huge maps, loads of vehicles and unique style of play unseen in any other FPS.
Up to 24 players can get together in the game’s online multiplayer modes, tackling maps that dwarf those featured in Call of Duty. BF4 also gives you the ability to take on a range of roles from mechanic to medic and engineer to sniper – each with their own special perks.
Modes include conquest, death matches, domination, rush, and more. This is another title with hundreds of hours of gameplay waiting to be enjoyed, with every multiplayer session promising something fun and exciting.
5. Destiny: The Taken King
The last on our list of the best multiplayer PS3 games is Destiny: The Taken King. Although Destiny released in 2014, The Taken King is a brand new experience for even long-time Destiny players.
Destiny: The Taken King is easily one of the most popular releases in 2015 and the player base continues to grow with all the new updates that continually keep the game fresh and interesting. With the release of the Taken King expansion, Bungie has completely overhauled the entire game making it better, more interesting, and a lot more fun.
Destiny was built with multiplayer in mind. From the shared world shooter experience to the competitive Crucible PvP, Destiny has a lot to offer and you’ll definitely get a lot of hours out of this game.
Destiny is by far one of the best multiplayer games on PS3 because of the fact it is an online only game. There is no true single-player experience to be had. You can play the game on your own, but you’ll still run into other players, co-op events, and the social hub which is the Tower.
Then there’s the multiplayer content which is pretty much unavoidable:
- Strikes – 3-man teams take on dungeon-like missions. These are basically instanced adventures.
- Daily Heroics – Although these can be done solo, most people will opt for help with these at higher difficulty settings.
- Weekly Heroic Strikes – Harder versions of normal Strikes. Again, you can do this solo but higher difficulties may warrant needed help.
- Weekly Nightfall Strikes – The hardest version of the Strikes. You can solo these as well but you better bring your ‘A’ game and have a strategy to solo the Nightfall.
- Raids – Can’t be done alone. This is the ultimate multiplayer experience in the game.
- Crucible – Destiny’s PvP content which is not for everyone but highly recommended you give it a chance.
Destiny is guaranteed to give you many hours of gameplay and fun to be had with others. Whether they are your friends, family or complete strangers, Destiny was built with a mindset that you’ll be sharing your experiences with others for a long time to come.
Which of these multiplayer games for PS3 should you buy?
So which of these PS3 multiplayer games should you get? If you have the money, try to experience as many as possible. If you could only choose one, it depends on your preference. I personally enjoy MMORPGs so I would choose Final Fantasy 14 or Destiny. If it was strictly for PvP multiplayer, I enjoyed Battlefield 4 a lot so I would choose that.
These are five PS3 multiplayer games that signify a huge leap that console multiplayer has taken since the PS3’s release nearly a decade ago. Now gamers can enjoy a more interactive and immersive experience than ever.
Games like Battlefield 4 are allowing up to 24 players to compete at any one time (or 64 players on the PS4 edition). This helps to create some memorable matches which end up being both chaotic and intense.
And games like Destiny are mixing both MMO elements into an online experience while keeping traditional PvP intact. There are a lot of things that Destiny does right. And being a first-person shooter designed as an online only game makes it one of the best multiplayer games on PS3 to date.
Whether you’re new to online gaming or a seasoned pro, getting hold of any of these titles promises to deliver a whole new angle to your multiplayer gaming experience.
