Whether you’ve been playing Pokémon since Red and Blue came out or just recently started playing with Omega Rub and Alpha Sapphire, we can all agree that we’re excited to get our hands on the new Sun and Moon versions.

If you’re as impatient as I am and have been re-watching every video that Nintendo releases for new clues about the Alola region and its new inhabitants, then you’ll be happy to know that you can now download a demo version of Pokémon Sun and Moon starting today!

Pokemon Sun and Moon demo is released

Pokémon Sun and Moon gameplay

According to the official Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon website the demo version has a different adventure than the main story in the full versions of the game. Starting the demo won’t cause any spoilers of the actual gameplay.

You will however get to explore the region, discover Pokémon that may not have been shown to us yet, and get to explore the beautiful Alola region.

You’ll also encounter the new Team Skull and face them in battle.

With the introduction of the Alola region and Nintendo trying to diversify the story line of Sun and Moon from the rest of the franchise they’ve introduced the new concept of “trials.”

This demo version lets you participate in a trial to understand how it works. From our assumption, each trial will be different based on your progression in the story.

In the demo version, your trial assignment is to take 4 photographs of Pokémon on the island, before facing off against the totem Pokémon.

In the full version of the game, you’ll need to complete all of the trials on a particular island before being able to move on to the next island. Getting familiar with them now in the demo will give you an edge once the game is completely released.

We don’t want to spoil too much of the demo for you so we’ll let you play the game to find out for yourself… or you can watch this livestream from GameSpot, whatever floats your boat.

How to Get the Pokémon Sun and Moon demo version

Pokemon Sun and Moon

The Pokémon Sun and Moon demo version is free to download and you can get it one of two ways:

Download it from Nintendo’s website

You can log in to the Nintendo website using your Nintendo account information that’s linked to your 3DS. From there you can download the Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon Special Demo Version onto your linked 3DS.

If you need some help finding your way visit Nintendo’s site for more details.

Download it from the Nintendo eShop

If that’s too lengthy of a process you can download it directly from your Nintendo 3DS. Open up your 3DS and start at the home screen, click on the Nintendo eShop icon and search for the Pokémon sun and Pokémon Moon Special Demo Version.

Demo Bonus: Ash-Greninja!

As if getting to play the game a month before it’s official release date was enough to get you to download it, as a special bonus you’ll get Ash’s Greninja on your team in the demo version.

This Greninja can be brought over to your full version of Pokémon sun or Pokémon Moon after it’s official launch once you’ve completed your adventure in the demo version.

After you play the demo version be sure to pre-order your version of Pokémon Sun or Pokémon Moon (or both!) today.
