The PC version of Mafia III is receiving a storm of criticism from early players. It’s not for it’s gameplay, story, or other elements that make the difference between a good game and a bad one. Instead, it’s for the fact the current maximum frame rate is 30 FPS.
All it takes is one look at the Steam page’s user reviews to see how fans feel about this. The number of angry players is enough that the developers are scrambling to create a patch that will fix this issue.
We currently have a patch running here at the studio that includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options in the video menu, among other improvements for the PC version of Mafia III. We’re verifying the patch now to ensure everything is working as expected. If everything goes well, we expect the update to go live this weekend. We will be keeping the PC community up-to-date on the status of the patch throughout the weekend and thank you for all the feedback!
The only positive that can be taken from this is that PC gamers have something to play. It’s far more common for the console versions of a multi-platform title to release first and leave PC gamers waiting months, if not years.
However, the fact that Mafia III is a fast-paced action game with plenty of driving means not having at least 60 FPS does impact the experience. 2K not providing early review copies prior to release has also drawn skepticism.
Mafia III released today for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Update: Mafia III has received a patch that has fixed the issue:
UPDATE [10/8 / 3PM PT]: PC players, reboot Mafia III because patch 1.01 is now available for download. This patch includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options on PC. To select your framerate, just head to the display menu in-game. Just make sure to tailor the framerate settings to the power of your machine. This patch also includes improvements to keyboard remapping, so head to the controls menu to check out the options. Note: this patch resets keyboard mapping to default, so any changes you made to the controls previously will need to be customized after installing the patch.
