Much like the original Final Fantasy, the latest numbered entry would have spelled the end of the series had it suffered poor sales. It looked to be the case to many after a long, hectic development cycle. But after praise from gamers and more than 6 million copies sold in only its first month on store shelves, it looks like the brand will continue strong.
But even though the game is an undeniable success and by many considered one of the best titles of this generation, it still has a lot of problems everyone agrees on. That’s why a big patch was announced a few weeks back that is set to fix some of the biggest issues in the game— mainly the infamous Chapter 13.
Game producer Haruyoshi Sawatari was on deck at PAX 2017 to talk about the new patch and Gladiolus DLC. He mentioned that Chapter 13 will now have a separate route where you play as Gladio and Ignis. Currently we only get to experience what Noctus goes through during the time he’s cut off from his two friends. What happened on the other side was kept a mystery… until now.
The update will include gameplay where you play as Gladio and have Ignis in your party. Their journey will finally shed light on what happened to Revis and Emperor Aldercapt during this time, which has also been kept in the dark. New cutscenes will be added to reveal more to the story.
Sawatari also hinted at a big gameplay revision to Noctus’ abilities during this chapter as well. The magical powers he receives while wearing the Ring of Lucii will be significantly more effective against the enemies he faces while on his own. While we doubt these changes will make Chapter 13 a great chapter, it will at least now be quicker to complete since enemies will be easier to defeat.
Lastly, Sawatari also confirmed that the upcoming Gladiolus DLC will last around 2 hours. A new mode will also be unlocked after its completion, adding a bit of replayability. Episode Gladiolus takes place when Gladio splits off from the group and, as hinted by Sawatari, goes to search for more power. Playing as him will feature a revamped battle system that catered to his brutish fighting style.
Other DLC content is in the works, including chapters that focus on Ignis and Prompto. The developers have mentioned that these DLC episodes will also feature gameplay that matches the character’s weapons of choice. Another DLC promised is a multiplayer expansion called Comrades. This expansion will allow you to play in co-op mode as one of the four main characters— Noctis, Gladiolus, Ignis, or Prompto.
