Curious which Xbox One titles offer the best multiplayer experiences? No need to dive into message boards or forums and ask for suggestions – we got you covered. Here are 10 of the best titles with excellent multiplayer modes on Xbox One.
A racing game set in a huge open world, Forza Horizon 3 is one of the few good reasons to buy an Xbox One instead of PS4 (unless you also own a PC). Forza Horizon 3 takes place in a fictional Australia, though it still features real locations like Byron Bay and Outback.
Over 300 cars are available, which players use to enter different car-related events in the game world such as time attacks and traditional point-to-point races. Players can upgrade and customize cars by unlocking the necessary parts or items.
Sadly, Forza Horizon 3 doesn’t allow split-screen local multiplayer due to technical limitations. But it does feature a four-player online cooperative campaign mode and a 12-player online competitive mode. Both of which will still allow you to hook up with real-life friends to see who is the true king of the road. You will just have to trade insults and taunts using headsets instead of directly in front of each other.
Despite the exclusion of split-screen local multiplayer, Forza Horizon 3 is still one of the best multiplayer games on Xbox One. It has lots of content and will most likely get more in the coming years. It features cross-platform multiplayer between Xbox One and PC, too, which is always neat.
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a compilation of the first four titles in the juggernaut Halo franchise, namely Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4. It features enhanced versions of all four titles, with all the original content remaining intact. This means the excellent cooperative and competitive modes where up to four players can connect locally or online remain unchanged.
The compilation initially launched with an assortment of technical issues in multiplayer. But Microsoft has since patched things up. Featuring lots of competitive multiplayer maps and the option to play cooperatively in all four campaign modes, The Master Chief Collection is definitely one of the best multiplayer experiences on Xbox One. For players who never had the chance to play the first four Halo titles, this compilation is the best way to catch up.
Rocket League is one of the most unusual games ever created. It is also one of the most fun multiplayer games out right now on Xbox One. The gameplay centers on a game of football where up to four players can hook up in split-screen local multiplayer and eight players in online multiplayer. However, instead of playing as human footballers, players control rocket-powered cars to “kick” a huge ball toward the goal. Cars can also ram other cars to temporarily take them out of the field.
Rocket League is easy to pick up, even for players who have never touched a racing or driving game before. The best thing about the gameplay is that it relies solely on player skills. Players can’t buy car upgrades that will give them an unfair advantage over opponents. In fact, a traditional leveling system is non-existent in Rocket League, which means grinding toward insane levels to get the upper hand in matches is not an option unlike in some multiplayer games. Everything depends on skill level.
The content is regularly updated by developer Psyonix, which keeps Rocket League from being stagnant and boring. Rocket League features cross-platform multiplayer. Sadly, due to Sony playing kill-joy, PS4 and Xbox One owners have no chance of going head-to-head with each other in a battle for supremacy. The good news is that the upcoming Rocket League on Nintendo Switch will be able to connect with both the PC and Xbox One versions.
Released just last year, Overwatch is a new IP from Blizzard Entertainment. It is currently one of the most popular multiplayer games available right now, a distinction that will likely continue for many more years. Overwatch is a first-person shooter game in which two six-player teams go up against each other in competitive matches online. Multiplayer maps have specific objectives, which players need to fulfill to get the victory.
Overwatch features a roster of unique heroes similar to an RPG. Each hero is categorized into one of four character types: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support. All heroes have set skills and characteristics similar to the characters in Team Fortress 2. Players can switch heroes at specific times during matches, giving Overwatch a sort of chess-like feel where players constantly try to counter opposing heroes.
Like other Blizzard Entertainment properties, Overwatch is regularly updated with new content, which includes alternate character skins, victory poses, and voice lines. Though players can use real-world money to buy content, it won’t boost their chances at winning. Overwatch is a fast-paced multiplayer game where everything can turn into complete chaos during any given match. Due to the importance of teamwork, it is best played with real-life friends in order to make communication a bit easier.
Much like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is a compilation of acclaimed titles released on older consoles. But unlike the Halo collection, it doesn’t come with the complete package. The Handsome Collection only includes Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, the second and third entries in the series, respectively.
All the original content found in the two included Borderlands titles has been retained. All the post-release content is also intact, making this compilation the ultimate experience of the two later Borderlands titles. The Handsome Collection is built specifically for current-gen consoles, obviously. Both included titles have been remastered, making the cel-shaded graphics even more charming.
The other notable change in this compilation is the multiplayer mode. Previously, only two players can connect in split-screen local multiplayer. The Handsome Collection now allows up to four players in split-screen multiplayer, making the campaign mode a walk in the park. Well, assuming all players can work together harmoniously toward a common goal. Both included games run beautifully on Xbox One, though playing in four-player multiplayer reduces the framerate. But don’t let that bother you. It doesn’t really affect the overall multiplayer experience.
6. Tekken 7
Tekken 7 is the latest entry in the long-running 3D fighting game series. Technically, it has been around since 2015, but only on arcades. Last month, it finally made the jump to consoles and PC. Tekken 7 retains the core gameplay seen in its predecessors in which the four action buttons are assigned to a specific limb, making it more accessible to newbies.
Mastering the game, however, is another story. Though button-mashing is still a viable “strategy” to win matches, it won’t work much during online multiplayer where many players are more than capable of countering an Eddy Gordo playing style. Like Street Fighter V, Tekken 7 shuns single-player content in favor of multiplayer, though at least Bandai Namco put more effort in the story even if it turned out to be only mildly interesting.
Bandai Namco made a couple of gameplay tweaks that directly affect how players strategize during online matches. The first is Rage Art, a super-powerful move that can only be executed when a character is in critical health. Rage Art will cancel the increased attack power that normally comes when in Rage Mode. The second is Power Crush, which allows a character to continue an attack even while being pounded. Both features serve to make online matches more exciting, especially during tight matches.
Another cool feature in Tekken 7 is the option to customize character appearances. There are dozens of different outfits, accessories, and other cosmetic items available in-game. All the cosmetic changes will still be in effect during online matches.
7. NBA 2K17
A list of the best multiplayer games won’t be complete without a single sports title.NBA 2K17 is the current representative in the acclaimed NBA 2K series. It offers an improved and much smoother gameplay than its predecessor. Obviously, the team rosters and graphics have been updated, too.
NBA 2K17 is best played with real-life friends in local multiplayer since it makes it easier for friends to taunt and trash-talk each other. You can team up with a buddy to repeatedly take down the Golden State Warriors using a cellar-dweller team like the Philadelphia 76ers just for fun. Or you can go up against each other using teams from different eras to settle the score on which era is the best.
The overall NBA experience has been enhanced in NBA 2K17, with incredibly detailed players moving and behaving just like in real life. The commentators and announcers featured, which includes David Aldridge, Doris Burke, and Shaquille O’Neal, also help in giving NBA 2K17 an authentic feel. With NBA 2K18 set to arrive in just a few months, it would be wise to simply skip NBA 2K17. Well, unless you want an already stable game that has a year’s worth of updates and patches.
Ever wondered what goes on behind-the-scenes in a restaurant? Behind every kitchen door, a team of chefs tirelessly work together to prepare all the dishes ordered by customers. Overcooked by Ghost Town Games isn’t exactly the most realistic cooking simulation game. But it does give you an idea of the pressure that restaurant chefs go through every day.
In Overcooked, up to four players can play together in local cooperative multiplayer. Actually, the game is best played that way, instead of in single-player mode. Players play as chefs in a single kitchen. The gameplay centers on cooking and serving as many dishes as possible within a set time limit.
An order queue is displayed at the top of the screen, which all players must pay attention to and work harmoniously to fulfill in time. Players earn coins for every dish served. However, dishes served in the wrong way don’t earn coins, which is why it’s important to pay close attention to the displayed order queue. Adding to the pressure is the fact that the kitchens in Overcooked aren’t exactly “regular” kitchens. “Obstacle courses” would be a more appropriate term for many of the kitchens in the game.
The stations are typically scattered around the kitchen, requiring players to be constantly on the move when attending to the dishes. Some kitchens are also set in the most bizarre locations. For example, in a certain level, the kitchen is in the middle of the street where pedestrians constantly cross and effectively act as annoying obstacles. And in one level, the kitchen is split into two because of an earthquake, raising one-half of the kitchen and making it temporarily inaccessible. Players on the other half will need to wait for the raised kitchen half to lower down before they can continue working.
Though Overcooked isn’t the most graphically appealing game on Xbox One, it is certainly one of the best when it comes to local cooperative multiplayer. Competitive multiplayer is also available. In that mode, players try to one-up each other by cooking and serving the most dishes within a time limit.
Minecraft is the ultimate proof that gameplay beats graphics. Featuring LEGO-like graphics, Minecraft is one of the ugliest-looking games around. Even an indie game with cartoonish graphics looks prettier. But Minecraft more than makes up for its graphical deficiencies by featuring an extremely addicting and fun gameplay, especially when playing split-screen multiplayer.
The game has an open world where players can do whatever the hell they want. There are no specific goals to follow. Players create their own adventures. Minecraft only serves as a “tool” to help players in realizing whatever adventure they come up with whether in Creative Mode or Survival Mode. The gameplay freedom in Minecraft can be overwhelming sometimes, though, especially for players who are used to playing linear games.
Another reason to play Minecraft on Xbox One is that the community is about to get bigger in the near future. It was announced at the recent E3 2017 that the hit adventure game is heading to Nintendo Switch and that it will feature cross-platform multiplayer with other versions of Minecraft – except the PS4 version. As mentioned earlier, Sony is playing hard-to-get when it comes to cross-network play between all major gaming platforms.
Capping off this list of the best multiplayer games on Xbox One is Chariot, another fantastic game for local cooperative multiplayer. Developed by Frima Studio, Chariot is a platformer where up to two players can work together to finish all the levels. What makes it different from other platformers is that players need to constantly drag around an object: the titular Chariot, which carries … a dead king. Yep, the corpse of a deceased royalty.
Both players must work together in lugging the Chariot around levels, which also includes pulling it on higher platforms. In case you’re curious how players can manage that specific task: One player goes first on the higher platform, while the other player stays behind on the lower platform. The former pulls the Chariot onto the higher platform. The latter helps in stabilizing the Chariot or acts as a support in case the Chariot falls back.
The game has physics-based mechanics, making the Chariot move the way it should in real life. Due to this mechanism, Chariot can be categorized as a half platformer and half puzzle. Though all the levels can be finished in single-player mode, having a buddy to carry the burden is definitely more fun. Like the previous two games in this list (Minecraft, Overcooked), Chariot is another example of a game that has unimpressive graphics but has a great and fun gameplay.
You can find Chairiot on the Microsoft Store.
